OPEN CALL for Czech artist

OPEN A.i.R. Artist in Residence Program at DEPO2015 in Pilsen as a legacy programme of Pilsen – European Capital of Culture 2015 in cooperation with Plants AiR Program of the ‘Novi Sad 2021’ Foundation is announcing an open call for Czech artists.


Date of residency: 1st of June – 13th of July 2018 (6 weeks in total)
Number of participants: 1

Profile of the resident: Czech artist or an artist living and working in the Czech republic. We are searching for an artist working in the field of design for children (graphic design, interactive design, animation, illustration).

Good command in English, spoken and written. The artist's work should react to local environment, his work should lead to an interaction with local people and local organisations.



Zmaj’s Children’s Games (Serbian: Змајеведечијеигре) is one of the largest festivals for children in both Novi Sad and Serbia. Proudly named after Jovan JovanovićZmaj, one of the most famous Serbian poets and writers of children's literature, the festival is held annually in June and December in Novi Sad.


The main idea behind the festival is to gather writers, illustrators, critics, publishers, editors and readers of children's literature from Serbia and beyond. Every June for a few days, children's plays, concerts, and shows gather children from Novi Sad and its surrounding region in ZmajJovina Street (the main street in Novi Sad's city centre).




Artists are expected to work on their project based on interaction with the local community, exploring the ways in which children’s imagination can be translated into different forms of visual language. The result of the residency is open to artist’s own vision of Novi Sad and the legacy of Jovan JovanovićZmaj. Possible results could be (but are not limited to):


An illustrated book/ booklet donated to local kindergartens
Creating a mural on the walls of schools or kindergartens 
New readings and visual expressions of Zmaj’s poetry
Creating content based on stories told by children
Working within the local bookshops where children’s literature readings take place regularly
Other forms of communication with young generations


Application including 3 documents (all in pdf format, in English):

- short CV

- portfolio (3-5 works/projects, up to 5MB)

- cover letter (up to 350 words) commenting on artistic intention, please mention how you would like to approach the topic of the residency as well as the ideas you would like to target.

Applications should be sent no later than April 20, 2018 to Residents will be chosen by a specialist jury by April 25, 2018.  

The organiser of the residency will provide:

-Transport (up to €250)
-Material and technical equipment required for the residency (up to €1000)
-Honorarium and per diem (€650 gross)


The DEPO2015 is a lively space where culture meets with business. The main aim is to support creative industries. The DEPO2015 Creative Zone is a sustainable outcome of the Pilsen - European Capital of Culture 2015 project. At the former bus depot, you can find an open workshop called Makerspace offering a co-working space, interactive exhibitions, a café, a community garden, offices for hire, art studios, a space for artistic residencies and a hall for concerts, conferences and theatre shows.
