Zajímá vás program? www.depo2015.cz BAROQUE REGION OF BOHEMIA BAVARIA The main goal of the Baroque Region of Bohemia Bavaria project is to increase the value and connect the common cultural heritage of the Bavarian and Pilsen regions. Part of the project are the neighboring regions of Upper Franconia, Upper Palatinate, Lower Bavaria on the Bavarian side and West Bohemia with the Pilsen and Karlovy Vary regions on the Czech side, which have great cultural and historical potential with their cultural baroque heritage. The project aims to connect the cross-border aspect of Baroque monuments as a common cultural heritage. The Baroque period in this area is characterized by cultural and historical parallels: trade, history, piety and art, these are the same between 1619 and 1745 in Bohemia and Bavaria. Master builders, architects and artists worked on both sides, and their cross-border works are proof of that. The aim of the project is to revive cross-border cultural exchange, significantly increase cultural and tourist activity, connect monuments and events, interest the young generation, discover hidden baroque treasures and revive the entire era with innovative contributions. The following activities were selected to achieve the desired result: 1. Barock-Info information platform Bilingual information platforms Barock-Info - 50 Baroque monuments of national and approx. 130 monuments of regional significance, which will be published on www.zapadoceskebaroko.cz and www.bbkult.net . 2. Magazine of the Baroque region of Bohemia Bavaria To start the Baroque season, at the beginning of summer in 2018, 2019, 2020, the Magazine of the Baroque Region of Bohemia Bavaria will be published with a cultural overview of Baroque monuments for the given season. 3. Baroque online The most important source of information about the Baroque region of Bohemia and Bavaria are the websites www.zapadoceskebaroko.cz and www.bbkult.net . In addition to the Barock-Info information platform, current contributions to the topic will be regularly published on both sites. 4. Behind the Baroque – interactive exhibition at DEPO2015 and on the road The exhibition Behind the Baroque is an interactive exhibition project for children and youth, which will premiere at the end of 2018 at DEPO2015 in Pilsen. The bilingual exhibition will be conceived in an attractive form, which will allow visitors of all generations to actively participate in the discovery of the Baroque theme. 5. Baroque gems of Bohemia Bavaria - traveling exhibition 100 of the most important Baroque buildings in the subsidy area will be presented at a traveling exhibition called Baroque Treasures of Bohemia Bavaria (approx. 50 on the Bavarian side, approx. 50 on the Czech side of the project area). 6. Baroque cultural events Cultural events in and around Baroque architectural monuments on the Czech and Bavarian sides will bring the Baroque period to life. Baroque ensembles, baroque delights and a baroque accompanying program will attract visitors and cement the baroque period in public awareness during the cultural seasons of 2018, 2019 and 2020. 7. Master music classes The master music courses aim to discover the common cultural heritage of baroque music, connect young music students from both sides of the border with professional lecturers and present the discovered and studied works to the public. 8. Seminars Two weekend seminars for tourist guides and a seminar for young craftsmen on the topic of stucco technique. 9. Interpretation and animation of the baroque heritage A professional symposium will be held in the newly restored premises of the monastery in Teplé, focused on the interpretation and animation of the baroque heritage. The target group is all residents of the project area; starting with children from the 1st school year and ending with the senior group. The implementation of the project takes place from 1 October 2017 to 31 September 2020. The leading partner of the project is Bavaria Bohemia e.V., the project partner is Plzeň 2015, z.ú. and KULTURISTA, an association for culture and tourism. The program was created during the preparatory years of the Plzeň - European Capital of Culture 2015 project, and during its existence, more than 500 volunteers participated in the organization of cultural, educational and research events through it. In 2015 alone, they devoted more than 6,000 hours of their free time to culture. The program continues to operate and DEPO2015 has become its home stage. The playground is located at the bottom of the courtyard on the right-hand side. In the upper part of the courtyard, there is the Foyer café, which is open from Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM and offers coffee, soft drinks, desserts, and ice cream. Various places throughout the territory of Pilsen and with a significant influence on their surroundings were transformed during the second year of the WALLZ festival into large-scale, thanks to leading Czech and foreign street art artists and permanent works of art. In total, ten artists participated in the six-day event at the invitation of the DEPO2015 venue, who painted a total of more than 2,500 m2 of surfaces on houses and walls. For example, the legend of the Czech graffiti scene Jan Kaláb, the first lady of Czech street art Toy Box, artists David Strauzz, Jakub Tytykalo, Ondřej Klíma aka Domino or one of the biggest personalities of contemporary European graffiti from the Urban Spree gallery in Berlin, Johannes Mundinger, came to Pilsen. The public could watch the creation of the works "live" throughout the week. "The main goal of this year is the cultivation of public space. All realizations are in places that need this intervention and the proposed graffiti react to the surrounding environment and work with it. Zajímá vás program? www.depo2015.cz INDUSTRIAL TRAIL The industrial trail following the historical attractions of the former sugar factory or tram depot and the current DEPO2015 area was opened for visitors before the end of last year. However, it is now presented in a new illustrated coat and also with new game elements, which will make it attractive especially for families with children. The format of marked stops is preserved from the original trail, where visitors can use a QR code to play short videos about the given place. The guide in the videos is always a historical figure closely related to the given location. Visitors can thus meet, among others, the engineer Smola, František Křižík, the builder Farkač and many other personalities associated with the industrial heritage of the city of Pilsen. The novelty that the trail brings is a tracking game intended for young and old interested in industrial history. The story begins with a time machine that transports visitors to the past. In order for everyone to return safely to the present, they must go through all the stops, solve the puzzles, find the second time machine and start it. At each stop, the visitor will be asked a question, to answer which he will have to examine the nearby surroundings in detail. "The industrial trail is currently one of the many opportunities to visit DEPO2015. Our goal was therefore to expand it to include activities for small visitors and to make the entire area even more accessible. In addition to the employees of DEPO2015, the creator of escape games, an illustrator and a scenographer participated in the development of the tracking game. "We hope that we managed to prepare a fun, smart and visually interesting walk through the industrial history and actually the present of the DEPO2015 area," adds Štěpán. The entire industrial trail takes place in the outdoor areas of the DEPO2015 complex and is therefore accessible daily, even during government-ordered measures. At the beginning, the idea was to give the residents of Pilsen and their guests a tool that would guide them through the unknown corners of Pilsen, introduce them to forgotten stories and show the city from an unexpected perspective. In 2016, the association Skrytá Plzeň was founded, which continues to organize neighborhood walks. The work on the guide led to meetings with a number of people, witnesses, active residents and archives, and the Hidden City thus became one of the projects that most involved the residents of Pilsen in cooperation. One of the main outputs of the project is the printed publication Guide to the Hidden Pilsen, the digital version of which can be downloaded HERE . The Pilsen family photo album exhibition, or a program of commented walks around the city led by witnesses, anthropologists and the city's inhabitants, also helped to discover the hidden identity of Pilsen. Neighborhood walks usually operate from May to October and present both the history and the present of the places that the average tourist does not have the chance to visit. The children got to know basic tools and materials, and could try different techniques for working with wood, metal or recycled materials as part of their own project. The story of the exhibition refers to Jules Verne's famous novel. At the start of the expedition, visitors will find themselves in the area in front of a huge suitcase. As soon as they enter it, they move in time to the beginning of the 20th century and find themselves in an English men's club. At that moment, the painting of Verne's hero Phileas Fogg, hanging on the wall, comes to life, drawing the player into the story and inviting them to make a bet, just like he once did, to complete a trip around the world in the gallows deadline. Visitors will have the task of passing through nine environments symbolizing different places around the world, from Venice in Italy, through a bazaar in the Middle East, the African savannah, India, to the forest of South America or the frozen landscape of the Arctic. In each of the environments, they have to solve a complicated task in order to get a clue in their passport and be able to continue their journey. Only the most skilled player can go around the entire planet in time, solve all the tasks correctly and get the treasure of Phileas Fogg himself. It works with the principle of scenic rendering of the environment, lighting elements and interactive exhibits linked by an engaging story. The exhibition is primarily intended for children who can already read and is recommended for families with children or groups of 2-8 players, who must go through artistically stylized environments of several countries around the world spread over an area of 450 m2. The DEPO2015 creative team collaborated with local artists on the creative and scenic rendering of the environment. The journey around the world was open in Pilsen from April 6 to August 31, 2024, where it was visited by 11,500 visitors. With this exhibition, DEPO2015 continues the previous successful author's projects Mysterious Forest , Emblem Hunters and Mystery of the Pilsen Metro . The journey around the world and the coat of arms hunters have already had a successful rerun in Bratislava's Bibiana children's museum, and the second mentioned in Prague's Holešovická Market. The exhibition is currently located in the Bibiana international children's art house in Bratislava, where it was transferred from Pilsen in the fall of 2024, and where it will be open until April 20, 2025. Zajímá vás program? www.depo2015.cz Mise PLZEN 2015 Plzeň 2015 is a non-profit organization founded by the city of Pilsen for the purpose of preparing and implementing the program part of the European Capital of Culture 2015 project. After 2015, it transformed from a non-profit society to a registered institute with an extension of activity for an indefinite period to ensure the sustainability of selected projects and run the Creative Zone DEPO2015. Pilsen - European Capital of Culture 2015 project was one of the most extensive cultural projects in the history of the Czech Republic, which had an impact on the functioning of not only the entire city, but also the Plzeň Region with a significant impact abroad. The costs of implementing the "soft part" of the project reached EUR 18 million. Private sponsors contributed over EUR 1 million, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic contributed EUR 4 million, the Pilsen Region and the European Commission contributed EUR 2 million, and the City of Pilsen contributed EUR 9 million. Overall, the result ended with a positive economic result, which was used for sustainable activities, especially the development of the DEPO2015 creative zone. Pilsen won the title in competition with 2 other cities (Ostrava and Hradec Králové) in 2010. This more than six-year process of transformation of the cultural scene in the West Bohemian metropolis brought, on the one hand, positive results in terms of an increase in tourism, an increase in awareness of the city or a fundamental change in participatory understanding culture and its transfer from classic stone buildings to public space. On the other hand, it was a difficult ordeal for city representatives, bureaucrats, the independent cultural scene and ordinary citizens. This investment in human capital and life experience for many is one of the main benefits of the entire project, which has also gone through difficult times. However, after a few years, it can be evaluated as a successful representation on the European cultural scene. The proof of this is that a number of projects continue successfully even years later. Over 4 dozen projects with German partners, 30 projects with Japanese partners and the involvement of 47 other countries in the program indicate the scope of the project and one of the main goals of the project – to support international cooperation and present the diversity of cultural heritage outside and beyond the borders of Europe. In 2015, the EHMK2015 events were visited by 1.2 million visitors, 515 volunteers joined the organization, and new infrastructure worth EUR 60 million was created. The increase in the number of accommodation compared to 2013 increased by 31%. The number of visits by German tourists increased by 70%, and even by 199% for Austrian tourists. The Pilsen region also reported a significant increase in tourism (14%). The economic part of the project evaluation shows, among other things, that the expenses of visitors associated with the EHMK amounted to over EUR 22 million in 2015 alone, and at least EUR 6.5 million was returned to public budgets. The fact that, for example, the increase in tourism continued in 2016 is also interesting. However, this effect is also visible in other successful EHMK cities. The main focus of the sustainability project Pilsen – EHMK2015 is the creative zone DEPO2015 , which, in addition to the operation of the former transport area, organizesfestival of lightFLASH FLASH , Czech-Bavarian cultural cooperation including the festival Meeting point in Pilsen and Regensburg , European Neighbor Day, WALLZ – Street Art Festival, Pilsen Design Week and a whole series of projects that originated or were inspired by the very principles defined in the 80s by the spiritual founder of the EHMK project - the Greek minister and actress Melina Mercouri. During the previous two years of the festival, more than 20 large-scale paintings by top artists from all over Europe were created on buildings, bridges and walls throughout Pilsen. Their works of art significantly improved the environment of selected locations in Pilsen, replacing unsightly peeling facades or old advertising banners. This trend will be followed by this year's edition, which will enrich the public space of the city with another dozen wall paintings. Among the invited artists were once again famous names from the Czech Republic and abroad, combining both a distinctive handwriting of realistic and figural painting, as well as colorfully engaging abstraction. This year's ambassador for the European Capitals of Culture was Tadas Šimkus from Lithuania's Kaunas 2022. The expected surprise was certainly the participation of world-renowned artist Brad Downey. This year's selection of locations for creation was very diverse - there was a nearby city center, a school facade, technical buildings, an underpass, part of the embankment, but also the much-discussed squatter's house in Jateční Street, where one of the most popular Czech street art artists, Chemis, left his painting. The festival was accompanied by a varied accompanying program in the form of a graffiti jam open to the general public, a Czech-German conference on art in public space and children's workshops. The DRAWetc studio was also involved with its artists.
